Sri Lanka has recently grown in popularity as a surfing destination. The waves in Sri Lanka are enticing to seasoned surfers, but even if you are new to the sport, you may discover wonderful areas.
Whether you’re a pro surfer pounding the world renowned waves of Arugam Bay, or an intermediate or novice seeking for some fun and a workout, Sri Lanka’s warm tropical waters make it the ideal place for surfing at any time of year.
Another excellent feature of this island is that it has two distinct seasons, allowing you to surf practically all year: from December to April, visit the golden, palm-fringed beaches of Sri Lanka’s South Coast, while from June to late September, visit Arugam Bay, Pottuvil Point, and Whisky Point. All of these places are near the Pottuvil/Arugam Bay area on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast.
From June to September, on Sri Lanka’s untamed East Coast, try Arugam Bay, a point-break beach excellent for all surfers, or Whisky Point, a popular hangout for beginners. Other outstanding surfing places south of Arugam Bay include Elephant Rock and Peanut Farm. For more experienced surfers, Pottuvil Point, located north of Arugam Bay town, offers superb surfing. Arugam Bay features a wide range of lodging options, including several villas. Arugam Bay also offers a diverse range of surfing schools and surfboard rental services.
From December to April: The South Coast of Sri Lanka features the best surfing beaches during this time of year. The nearest surfing area to the airport is Hikkaduwa, north of Galle, which has tremendous waves for experienced surfers, while the beaches from Mirissa to Dikwella and Tangalle have some beautiful surfing spots for beginners to more experienced surfers.
Here are some of our own recommendations for the best beach villas in Sri Lanka for surfers. These villas are placed directly in front of or within walking distance of some of Sri Lanka's best surfing areas.

Nilwella Palms is a six-bedroom villa located on the Southern Coast of the beautiful Island of Sri Lanka. Located near the small village of Nilwella which is minutes away from Hiriketiya surfing beach and about 2.5 hours drive from Colombo Airport. Our villa is fully staffed so just switch off, lie back and relax
The beach stretch in front of the villa is almost completely deserted, so guests can enjoy peaceful morning and evening stroll with nothing disturbing the silence but the sound of the waves. Designed to reflect Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural style ‘tropical modernism’, the blurring of indoor and outdoor spaces, everything about Nilwella Palms encourages guests to embrace the laidback rhythm of this area: relax in the open-plan, open-sided living space which is cooled by the sea breeze and furnished with a vast sofa and dining table; retreat to your sea-view room and take a nap in the exceptionally comfortable bed, and recline on a sun lounger by the swimming pool in the garden

Kambura villa is situated on the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka where there is nothing between it and the South Pole. This southern tip is where huge oil tankers and luxury liners pass on their journeys around the world.
From Kambura Villa it is only 5 minutes to Mirissa Harbour to go whale watching, 1 hour to Galle Fort…a UnescoHeritage Site. Guests can also take a day trip to Yala for a safari to see leopards, or go to Udawallawe National park to see the wild elephants, or visit the little known BundalaNational Park. Bundala National Park is considered by many to be one of the best sites in the world to see migrating birds. These are some of the best options that we recommend but there are many other villas around the area as well. Do get in touch with us via hello@luxurycollectionsrilanka.com to get a list done with your preference.
