The Canopy - A Secluded Jungle Villa near Galle, Sri Lanka
Villas in Galle, Sri Lanka
Description
The house is modern colonial in style, open-plan, with floor-to-ceiling windows that put the trees in every room. Interiors are furnished with handwoven textiles, local teak and pieces by regional craftsmen, so it reads as considered rather than corporate. It sleeps four adults and two children, including space for a baby, which makes it a natural fit for a couple, two couples travelling together, or a young family who want somewhere quiet.
Being inland is the trade-off that buys the seclusion, and it is a small one. Thalpe beach is a fifteen-minute drive and Galle Fort is close by, so you can spend the morning on the coast and be back among the trees by lunch. The villa is gated and fully staffed, with a private chef and overnight security.

Villa Spaces
The Two Bedrooms
The Canopy has two bedrooms, both air-conditioned and both fitted with king beds, sleeping four adults with room for two children including a baby.
The master bedroom is on your left as you enter the house. It is the more spacious of the two, with a king bed, a cot available for a baby, and its own ensuite bathroom. Floor-to-ceiling glass gives it the same jungle outlook as the rest of the villa, so it is a room you wake up in with green on every side.
The second bedroom sits on the right of the entrance, also with a king bed. Its bathroom is not ensuite: it is a separate bathroom reached by crossing the living area toward the back of the house. This is worth knowing before you book. In practice it suits a couple travelling with friends, or grown children, more than it suits anyone who wants a bathroom two steps from the bed. Guests who have understood the layout in advance have had no issue with it, which is precisely why we would rather tell you now than have you find out on arrival.
Baby cots and highchairs are available on request, and with two bedrooms the villa works best for four to six people who know each other well.
Living Spaces and the Media Room
The living area is the centre of the house, open-plan and framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the forest right up to the glass. It runs into the dining space and out to the pool terrace, so the boundary between inside and out is deliberately soft. Ceiling fans and air conditioning keep it comfortable, and the high, open volume of the room means it stays cool even in the middle of the day.
There is also a media room with satellite television and a proper entertainment system, plus high-speed wifi throughout. On the south-west coast an afternoon of monsoon rain is part of the deal between May and September, and having genuine indoor space to spend it in matters more than most villa listings admit.
The Infinity Pool and the Canopy View
The pool is the heart of the villa and the reason for its name. It sits at the edge of the slope so the water appears to spill straight into the jungle below, with nothing built anywhere in view. Float in the late afternoon and the only noise is birds. Stay out after dark and the treeline fills with fireflies.
It is one of very few pools in this part of Sri Lanka where the outlook is forest rather than sea, and guests who have done the beach circuit tend to find it a genuine relief. Loungers and shaded corners are set around the terrace, and the pool is the natural gathering point for the whole day, from morning coffee through to a drink as the light goes.
Seven Acres of Gardens and Jungle
The grounds are what make The Canopy feel much larger than a two-bedroom villa. Paths wind through the trees past frangipani and flowering shrubs to seating nooks set among the greenery, quiet spots for a book or a coffee where you cannot see the house at all.
The wildlife is the real attraction. Monkeys move through the canopy through the day, and the birdlife is exceptional, particularly in the hour after dawn. Guided walks in the surrounding forest can be arranged through the villa. For families, the grounds work in a way a beach garden does not: children can explore safely, well away from any road or open water, and there is genuinely something new to find each morning.
Dining and Service
The Canopy is fully staffed, with a private chef building menus around your preferences and mixing Sri Lankan cooking with international dishes. Meals are served wherever suits, in the open living space, at the dining table, or outside by the pool with the forest around you. Welcome drinks on arrival, daily cleaning, electricity, water and garden upkeep are included, and meals are charged on ingredient cost, so you pay for what is actually cooked.
A security guard is on site overnight across the gated grounds, which for a property this secluded is reassuring rather than intrusive. Extra beds, airport transfers and taxes are charged separately.
Where The Canopy Is
The villa sits inland from the coast just outside Galle, which puts a great deal within reach while keeping the jungle quiet.
Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive: cobbled streets, Dutch colonial architecture, the ramparts at sunset, and the best concentration of restaurants, galleries and boutiques on the south coast. Thalpe beach is around fifteen minutes, and from there the coast opens up, with Unawatuna and the more secluded Jungle Beach nearby, the stilt fishermen and boat trips on Koggala Lake a little further east, and the surf schools of Ahangama and Weligama beyond that. Surf lessons, whale watching from Mirissa and tea estate visits are all comfortable day trips, and the villa team will arrange drivers and excursions.
Bandaranaike International Airport is roughly two and a half hours north via the Southern Expressway
Ideal For
Couples, two couples travelling together, and young families who want somewhere genuinely quiet with the coast still close. It suits anyone who would rather wake to birdsong than to beach noise, and anyone doing a longer Sri Lankan itinerary who wants a few days of green and calm between stretches of coast.

The perfect home away from home for our family - private, serene, and located among beautiful surroundings, the house was everything we hoped for and more.
Beautifully decorated, yet welcoming, the house gave us the space to relax and explore the south of Sri Lanka - with easy access to the coast and countryside alike.
The real bonus was the lovely housekeepers who made us feel at ease and treated us to some of the best locale food we had during our time in Sri Lanka.
Cannot recommend the Canopy enough - we will be back.
If you're looking for a scenic getaway in the hills surrounded by nature and wildlife, this is the perfect place.
The villa is beautifully decorated, and the beds were the most comfortable we've ever slept in. What truly made our stay exceptional, though, was the incredible staff, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.
We chose to have dinner at the villa every evening because the food was better than any restaurant we had visited during our trip. The house was spotless throughout our stay.
A special thank you to Kumara, an amazing chef who even catered to our fussy son without hesitation. The housekeeping team did a fantastic job, and the caretaker kindly took us on a walk around the estate. We also loved the sweet dog that stayed outside the villa, keeping watch and chasing away the monkeys.
We loved every minute of our stay and are already booking our return visit. We can't wait to come back! 5 stars and more
The property is absolutely beautiful - from the tastefully done interiors to the lush gardens, pool, and verandas, every corner feels like a little slice of paradise. It was peaceful and calming, making it the perfect place to unwind. Bakshi, the guard dog, was an added highlight! We would happily return whenever we're in Sri Lanka and would highly recommend this place to anyone
Wow! What can I say, this place surpassed our expectations. Such a beautiful peaceful home and the nature is just mesmerising. We loved the sounds of nature each day, the pristine swimming pool which made you feel calm and connected with the nature surrounding it.
Staff were friendly, helpful and very accommodating. I nearly took Kumara home with me in my bag. His cooking is divine and we ate super well. Nadee was wonderful too and always happy to help. We even had our own private guide around the property - Bakshi the dog. He showed us around the place and took us for a walk. His company was lovely and he kept those monkeys in the trees.
The decor was tasteful and with lots of thought. We spent our evenings reading outside and playing board games- what an incredible place to disconnect.
We will definitely be back- with friends next time. This was our first trip to Sri Lanka and this left a wonderful mark in our hearts for sure.
Can’t wait to be back soon!
Just as so many guests at The Canopy do, we extended our stay shortly after arriving.
The house is impeccably clean, beautifully decorated, and maintained to a very high standard. The beds are exceptionally comfortable, with quality linens, and the staff are outstanding. Even without all of these touches, we would still rate The Canopy five stars.
The pool was the absolute highlight of our stay. You can float for hours in the salt water, leisurely watching many kinds of birds bathe in the corner, monkeys pass through the trees overhead, and peacocks roaming freely nearby. Set at an elevated level among beautiful trees and bamboo, the pool offers a truly special and unique experience.
The atmosphere is deeply tranquil, and being here feels like a return to Eden.
We would have gladly extended our stay again, but sadly the property was already fully booked.
Outstanding!! The pictures exactly match what you will get - an amazing Villa, superbly furnished to the smallest detail surrounded in a beautiful rain forest setting. In the mornings you are greeted by the peacocks while you watch the monkeys take their breakfast. The entire canopy team has made it like a true home for us - they were wonderful with our 2 year old daughter and the food was so good that we ate at the villa nearly every night. True 10/10 - we have been to the best hotels in Sri Lanka before (like Hilton Yala) and this was head and shoulders above!
We stayed at the Canopy for just over a week. Our stay was perfect. The accommodation and pool are beautiful. It’s an extremely comfortable house surrounded by beautiful lush gardens. The staff are exceptional. Nadee, Kumara and Chintika looked after us amazingly and made us feel at home. Kumara is a fantastic chef and the food we had was of exceptional quality - a diverse and plentiful representation of Sri Lankan cuisine. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel relaxed and at ease always, especially given we were travelling with our 5 month old son. We would recommend anyone stay at the canopy, you will have a magical time!
We loved staying at the canopy! The whole experience was amazing. Beautiful house with thoughtful decor and surrounded by beautiful nature. The view from the pool was incredibly relaxing and doing a jungle walk was great fun for the kids. Highlight though was the amazing cooking and care from our hosts. Better than any restaurant we ate at!! Also amazing place for kids with toys snd books they loved.
We, my husband, me and our adult son) spent a week in this beautiful house.
It is a heavenly retreat in the middle of green nature. If you like nature and animals, this is the place to be!
In addition, the house is extremely comfortable, you can only feel comfortable.
Kumara, Nadi and Zintaka spoiled us so infinitely and were so caring that we actually didn't want to go home anymore. We'll miss it a lot.
Thanks again for this lovely stay!
Couldn’t have asked for a better experience for our holiday! The villa was absolutely beautiful inside and out and the team were 10/10 the entire time.
Nadee was a superstar with everything housekeeping and breakfast-wise, Kumara was so incredibly helpful when we had a bit of a rocky arrival (our own fault) and the gardener (apologies, we didn’t catch his name!) was so friendly and gave my partner a lift to a pharmacy when I caught a sickness bug.
100% recommend, we will definitely be back if we can!!
Our stay at The Canopy was absolutely perfect from start to finish. The villa itself was stunning - beautifully designed, spotless, and incredibly comfortable, with every detail thoughtfully taken care of. The staff were exceptional: warm, attentive, and always ready to help with anything we needed, making us feel completely at home. The location is truly special, set in the middle of the jungle with such peace and privacy, yet only a quick 10-minute drive to the beach. It was the perfect balance of tranquility and convenience. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay and would return in a heartbeat.
The Canopy is a hidden gem in the jungle. A truly wonderful team who made us feel at home immediately. The salt pool was so peaceful, with monkeys to share the time with. The beds are unbelievably comfortable, and the décor is exceptionally well done. I would happily have stayed much longer.
