Description
The interiors are white walls, glass and polished cement, cool and uncluttered, and a fifteen-metre infinity pool runs along the front of the villa looking straight over the sand. All five bedrooms have king beds, ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning and sea views. The villa sleeps up to twelve and comes fully staffed, with a chef whom past guests mention as often as they mention the architecture.
What makes Saltwater Beach Villa unusual among beachfront properties on this coast is that you can walk to dinner. Several beachfront cafés and restaurants sit a short stroll along the sand, including Wijaya Beach, one of the best-known spots on the south coast. Most beachfront villas in Sri Lanka are either isolated or cut off from the beach by the main road. This one is neither.

Five Ensuite Suites
Saltwater Beach Villa has five bedrooms sleeping up to twelve guests, arranged across two floors so that every room gets its share of the view.
Two Deluxe Garden Suites sit on the ground floor, opening onto the gardens with the pool and the ocean beyond. Being at ground level they suit anyone who would rather avoid stairs, and they are a few steps from the water.
Two Deluxe Balcony Suites occupy the first floor, each with its own private balcony looking out over the sea. These are the rooms guests ask for by name, and with reason. Waking to that view with the sound of the surf below is the thing past guests write about most.
The fifth room is a large Deluxe Family Room, also on the first floor, with space for children alongside the main bed.
Every room has a king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom with a heated towel rack, air conditioning, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and a safe. The bathrooms are generously proportioned, and guests consistently describe the rooms as having real style rather than the generic finish common in newer builds. Bathtubs, hairdryers, satellite television and wifi are provided throughout.
The 15-Metre Infinity Pool
The pool is the heart of the villa. Fifteen metres of infinity edge running the length of the house, positioned so the water appears to meet the ocean beyond it, with the beach immediately below.
It faces west, which on this coast means the sunset arrives directly in front of you rather than off to one side. You can watch the surf from the water with a drink in hand, which is precisely what the architecture was designed for. Loungers and shaded corners sit around the terrace, and in practice this is where groups spend their days, moving between the pool, the sand and lunch without ever quite deciding to.
Architecture and Interiors
Eresh Weerasuriya is among the most respected architects working in Sri Lanka, and Saltwater Beach Villa is a clear expression of his approach: clean lines, white walls, glass and polished cement, with the building shaped around the view rather than the view added as an afterthought.
The result is a house that feels calm and contemporary rather than ornate. Living spaces open directly to the pool terrace and the sea, ceilings are high, and light moves through the building all day. For guests who have spent a fortnight touring temples and colonial architecture, arriving somewhere this uncluttered tends to feel like a genuine relief.
The Beach, and Walking to Dinner
Saltwater Beach Villa sits directly on the sand at Dalawella, and the practical advantage of this particular stretch is walkability. A short stroll along the beach brings you to several beachfront cafés and restaurants, Wijaya Beach among them, long established as one of the most popular places to eat and be seen on the south coast.
This matters more than it sounds. At most beachfront villas in Sri Lanka, an evening out means arranging a driver. Here you walk down the sand and back again. Dalawella is also home to the famous rope swing on the palm tree, one of the most photographed spots on the island, and the sheltered bay at Unawatuna is minutes away. The beach in front of the villa is seasonally safe for swimming. However, if you walk towards to your left for 1 minute you will be reaching a lagoon type of a place in the ocean which is named 'Wijaya Beach' and that is safe for swimming year around.
Dining and Full Staff
The villa is fully staffed, and the cooking is what guests single out most after the view. The resident chef prepares Sri Lankan and international dishes to your preferences, one memorable meal after another according to more than one guest, served wherever suits: on the pool terrace, indoors, or out closer to the sand.
Meals are charged on ingredient cost rather than a fixed rate, so you pay for what is actually cooked, which works out well for families and longer stays. Welcome drinks on arrival, staff, electricity, water and daily cleaning are included, with extra beds, airport transfers and taxes charged separately. A security guard is on site, and the team will arrange drivers, excursions, surf lessons and celebrations. Several groups have marked anniversaries and milestone occasions here and describe the staff as having become like family by the end of the week.
Where Saltwater Beach Villa Is
Dalawella sits on the Galle to Matara road between Unawatuna and Thalpe, roughly 124 kilometres from Colombo, which makes it one of the best-placed bases on the south coast.
Galle Fort is a short drive, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobbled streets, Dutch colonial architecture, ramparts to walk at sunset and the strongest concentration of restaurants, galleries and boutiques anywhere on this coast. Unawatuna bay, one of the most sheltered on the island, is minutes west, along with the secluded Jungle Beach and the Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland above it.
Heading east, Thalpe and Koggala, with its lake, boat safaris and stilt fishermen, are close, as is the Handunugoda Tea Estate and its Virgin White Tea. The surf schools of Ahangama and Weligama are a comfortable drive, and Mirissa is around forty minutes for whale watching between November and April. A well-regarded yoga shala and several surf breaks are nearby. Bandaranaike International Airport is roughly two hours north via the Southern Expressway.
Ideal For
Families, groups of friends, couples travelling together and special occasions. The mix of ground-floor garden suites and first-floor balcony suites works well for mixed-age groups, and being able to walk to dinner along the beach makes it one of the easiest beachfront villas on the south coast for a group that would rather not arrange a driver every evening.

Amazing villa ! Super service and amazing staff
Had a great stay at Saltwater Villa. The place was really nice, and comfortable. Staff were very polite and helpful. The chef can pretty much cook up anything you ask for, and the Sri Lankan menus were top notch. Overall, a really good experience and enjoyed the stay.
A huge thank you to the wonderful staff of Salt water Villa Unawatuna for taking care of us and making Christmas 2025 and the New Year 2026 such a magical experience in this beautiful villa.

We enjoyed this villa for four days in December 2022 as a family, and what a wonderful experience it was! The view, the pool, the rooms—everything was marvelous. The staff was fantastic, and the chef introduced us to some delicious dishes.

The location is perfect, close to Galle, which is very pretty. There's a beach just 200 meters away where wild turtles come to swim with you. Everything is perfect.

Its contemporary and beyond comfortable. The staff became like our family. They were wonderful and incredibly helpful. Madhu, the chef cooked us one fantastic memorable meal after another. The is the most beautiful Hotel in Sri Lanka. We travelled around the country & this was the perfect ending to our trip. The infinity pool overlooks the beach & has stunning views & sunsets.
